Hobbyist: The Reality of Buying Vintage Avon Fragrances

Looking through an Avon catalog used to be one of the most exciting things for me when I was in primary school. Out of all the sections, the fragrance pages were always my favourite. I still remember rubbing the perfume tester strips printed on the catalog pages and being amazed by the scent that appeared on my fingertips. It felt almost magical back then.

Owning an Avon perfume was a huge dream for me as a child. Since I depended entirely on my parents' pocket money, buying one was simply out of reach. Fast forward to my secondary school years between 2012 and 2014, anyone wearing an Avon fragrance was considered one of the "cool kids" among our small group of perfume lovers. Avon scents were surprisingly popular and highly appreciated at that time.

Early this year, I started a new hobby—collecting vintage and discontinued Avon fragrances. I feel incredibly fortunate to have found reliable Shopee sellers who specialize in old-stock Avon perfumes. Sellers such as Ruslan Bin Abdul Jalil and Elizabeauty Enterprise have become my go-to sources because they regularly restock discontinued Avon fragrances that are increasingly difficult to find today.

However, buying vintage or deadstock fragrances is always a gamble. One example is the Avon Simple Elements line, such as Meadow Dew and Fresh Wood, which were originally launched in the mid-2000s. My bottles was manufactured on 26 September 2011 based on the production code stamped on the box. While finding these fragrances feels like discovering a treasure, age and storage conditions play a huge role in determining their quality.

Fragrances built around citrus notes, watery accords, green herbs, and other light aromatic ingredients tend to deteriorate faster over time. Vintage bottles may develop darker liquid colours, ranging from yellow to brown, as oxidation occurs. Whether a fragrance remains wearable often depends on how well it was stored throughout the years.

The experience is very different when it comes to Avon’s iconic Far Away collection. Unlike the lighter Simple Elements fragrances, Far Away perfumes are built around rich ingredients such as amber, vanilla, sandalwood, resins, and musk. These heavier notes tend to age exceptionally well, making them some of the safest vintage Avon purchases available today.

[To be honest, my unit was not in sealed packaging, there are signs of use] But that is okay for me. No changes with the scent at all.

Another fascinating find is Avon Far Away Exotic, a limited-edition flanker released around 2012. While the spicy chai, patchouli, amber, and sandalwood notes age beautifully, the fruity mango and mandarin opening can become weaker or slightly sour over time. Nevertheless, it remains a highly sought-after fragrance among Avon collectors due to its rarity and unique scent profile.

For me, collecting vintage Avon fragrances is more than just a hobby. It is a nostalgic journey back to a time when I could only dream of owning these perfumes. Every bottle tells a story—not only about fragrance history, but also about memories, trends, and personal experiences that have stayed with me throughout the years.

Sometimes, the perfumes we couldn't afford as children become the treasures we enjoy collecting as adults.
