Bought It, Forgot It, Expired It: Why We Need to Stop Overbuying Skincare

Skincare is meant to help us take care of our skin, but sometimes our shopping habits do more harm than good—to our wallets and to the products we already own.

Most of us buy skincare because we genuinely need it. Maybe our cleanser is running low, or we're looking for a moisturizer that suits our skin concerns. The problem starts when we continue buying new products before finishing the ones we already have.

A familiar scenario goes something like this: you're halfway through a serum when a brand announces a huge sale. The discount is tempting, and suddenly you're convinced that buying another bottle—or two—is a smart way to restock. You tell yourself you'll use them eventually.

Months later, those products are still sitting unopened in a drawer.

Sales and promotions can make us feel like we're saving money, but in reality, we're spending money on products that may never get used. Sometimes we become so focused on getting a good deal that we forget to check what we already own. Before we know it, some products have expired while still sealed in their original packaging.

Another reason many of us overbuy is FOMO—the fear of missing out. Every week, a new skincare product goes viral on social media. Influencers praise it, reviews flood our feeds, and suddenly it feels like a product we absolutely must have.

But here's the question: why spend money on something we're not even sure will work for our skin?

Just because a product is popular doesn't mean it's suitable for everyone. Different skin types have different needs. A serum that works wonders for someone else may cause irritation, breakouts, or simply do nothing for us. Chasing every trend often leads to a collection of barely used products rather than healthier skin.

When we add up all these purchases, the cost becomes significant. We spend more and more money, yet gain very little value because many of the products are never fully used. The result is wasted money, wasted products, and unnecessary clutter.

So how can we break this habit?

The first step is to regularly check and organize our skincare collection. Setting aside a few minutes once a month can make a huge difference. Look through your products, check expiration dates, and take note of what you're currently using.

The second step is simple: finish what you already have before buying something new. Unless a product has expired or doesn't suit your skin, try to use it consistently until it's empty. This helps reduce waste and allows you to get the full value from your purchase.

Before buying another product, ask yourself:

  • Do I really need this right now?

  • Do I already own something that serves the same purpose?

  • Am I buying this because of a sale or because I genuinely need it?

  • Will I realistically use it before it expires?

Being a mindful skincare consumer doesn't mean never buying new products. It means making thoughtful purchases based on your needs rather than impulse, trends, or discounts.

At the end of the day, the best skincare product isn't the newest one, the most viral one, or the one with the biggest discount. It's the one you actually use until the very last drop.
