Local Finds : Siniawan Short trip
It was just a casual outing with a few of my friends last week—nothing fancy, totally unplanned! Honestly, I love doing things this way. No schedules, no pressure… just going with the flow. It kind of feels like spotting a candy 🍬 and grabbing it without overthinking—simple little joys, haha!
So, we decided to head over to Siniawan Old Town in Bau, Sarawak. None of us really had a fixed plan, we just wanted to explore and see where the day would take us. And wow, the place did not disappoint.
Siniawan is actually quite famous for its old shoplots that are almost 160 years old. Can you imagine that? These buildings were made from ironwood over a century ago, and they’re still standing strong today like they’ve barely aged. It’s honestly impressive. The ironwood, which comes from the Borneo Rainforest, is known for being super durable—that’s why it was the material of choice back then.
Walking through the town feels like stepping back in time. There’s something really special about how Siniawan has managed to preserve its originality over the years. It’s not overly modernized, so you still get that authentic, old-town charm.
And of course, we couldn’t miss the Weekend Night Market. That’s probably one of the highlights! There were so many food options—seriously, it was hard to choose what to eat. From local snacks to more filling dishes, everything looked and smelled amazing 😌. Definitely a foodie’s heaven.
What’s also interesting is that beyond its beautiful old buildings, Siniawan actually tells a story. Back in the day, it was an important spot for trading, especially between Bau and Kuching. You can still feel that history there, especially knowing that water transport used to play a big role in connecting people and goods.
All in all, it was such a chill and memorable trip. No planning, no expectations—just good company, good food, and a little bit of history along the way. Sometimes, those are the best kind of days ✨
